Scan attendance with a QR card

Mark students or staff present by scanning their ID card instead of a roll call, with a USB scanner, a Bluetooth scanner, or the device's camera.

Attendance → Scan Attendance marks someone present the moment their ID card is scanned, using its QR code. It needs the Student ID Cards module with QR codes turned on — see Student ID cards.

The Scan Attendance page

Students or staff

If you are allowed to mark both, two buttons at the top let you switch between Students and Staff. If you can only mark one of them, that one opens directly.

Scanning a card

You can use either of these, one card at a time:

  • A USB or Bluetooth barcode/QR scanner. Plug it in or pair it — it works like a keyboard, so just point it at a card. It types the card's code into the box and presses Enter for you.
  • The device's camera. Tick Use this device's camera instead, allow the browser to use the camera when asked, and hold the card up to it.

You can also type or paste a card's code into the box by hand and click Mark attendance.

What happens after a scan

A message appears saying what happened:

  • Marked present, with the time.
  • Already marked present today — scanning the same card twice in a day is not an error, it just tells you.
  • For staff: checked in, checked out (a second scan the same day checks them out), already checked in and out today, or on approved leave today.
  • Not active if the student or employee's record is inactive.
  • Not recognised if the code does not match any card.

The Scanned today list below shows the last several people marked this way, most recent first.

If something goes wrong

What you see What it means
The Scan Attendance page is missing from the menu Your package does not include Attendance, or you are not allowed to mark attendance or staff attendance.
Only Students or only Staff shows, no switch You are only allowed to mark that one.
The camera option does not turn on The browser needs permission to use the camera — check its address bar for a blocked-camera icon.
That card was not recognised The card's QR code may belong to another school, or the card was reissued (see Student ID cards) and is no longer valid. Print a fresh card.
Too many unrecognised cards in a row Scanning is paused for a minute as a safety measure. Wait, then try again.
